COP15 – Biodiversity in Montréal
When

In the face of accelerating biodiversity loss, the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) play a key role in shaping an ambitious international action framework. These major gatherings allow countries to set global targets and coordinate efforts to protect ecosystems and species in support of a sustainable future.

Adopted in 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit, the CBD is the main international legal instrument dedicated to biodiversity conservation. Held every two years, the COPs bring together the 196 Parties to review progress and negotiate new collective commitments.

COP15, held in Montréal in 2022, marked a turning point with the adoption of the Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework. This roadmap sets out 23 targets to be achieved by 2030 to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. It calls on all stakeholders—governments, local authorities, civil society, and the private sector—to work towards a shared vision: living in harmony with nature by 2050.

As a public agency for international technical cooperation, Expertise France supports partner countries in implementing this framework, by strengthening public policy, developing nature-based solutions, combating wildlife trafficking, and promoting inclusive and locally rooted biodiversity governance.
